The SODA International Residency Project

In 2005 Western Australian ceramic artist Fleur Schell and her husband Richard Hill launched The International Ceramic Residency Project in Fremantle, Western Australia (WA).

The facility accommodates visiting artists from around the world where they can develop work in a large shared studio complex with four permanent Western Australian arts practitioners. Visiting artists also have the option to spend time working and researching off campus at the SODA remote forrest retreat at Hamelin Bay - one of the most stunningly bio-diverse and spectacular wilderness frontiers in the world. In exchange the visiting artists have the option to share their knowledge and expertise of clay with the local communities of WA through presentations and workshops.

SODA invites applications from established and emerging contemporary ceramic artists from intertstate or overseas. The SODA Fremantle campus is located in the most isolated capital city in the world and is suited to artists looking to be inspired by the unique flora and fauna, incredible landforms and intensity and contrast of sunlight that Australia is renowned. It’s a great location to research or develop a new body of work.

SODA is also suitable for emerging artists undergoing the transition from school to establishing a studio. It is ideal for ceramic artists interested in invigorating their practice, expanding their contacts and seeking to meet other making professionals from Australia. The luxury of time at SODA allows for intense periods of creativity in a supportive environment alongside internationally acclaimed ceramic artists. You can interact with the other makers or utilize the space to be quiet and reflective.

FACILITIES: The residency includes 4 short term (8 weeks, the time frame is negotiable) residencies a year with access to all studio facilities. The Artist Directors occupy the permanent studio space within the complex, and an open and sharing outlook is essential. Glazing and kiln facilities are available on-site. SODA has an exhibition space within the complex which is available for exhibitions. There is a retail ceramic supply business near by where artists can purchase supplies. Digital facilities to present workshops or slide presentations are available.

LOCATION: SODA is located along the main public train system so visiting artist do not require their own transport. It is 300 meters from the Indian Ocean and 50 metres from the Swan River. It is just a 2-minute train ride to the historic cultural hub of Fremantle - the exciting fishing boat harbour lined with great pubs and shops, café’s, museums and fresh growers market.

ACCOMODATION: Included in the residency is an on-site fully furnished self-contained studio apartment. This also includes Internet access. Artists are required to pay their accommodation, living expenses and the cost of materials and firing.

HOW TO APPLY: There is no application deadline and applications will be considered throughout the year. Please include a short proposal for the Residency, 10 digital/slide images of work, a comprehensive CV and current contact details. Visiting artists are chosen according to the quality of the work, its artistic merit, diversity and stage of career development. Please give us an indication of your preferred dates for your residency.
